Finding Peewee

Posted by Julie Branstetter on Tuesday, October 7, 2014, In : Writing

We had a nearly horrific experience today. Zoe took her guinea pig outside this afternoon and became distracted somehow.  She forgot he was out there. He was not in a cage, just with her until she set him down. Well, she came in eventually, forgetting he was even outside and only remembered much later in the day when she went into her room to see him again and he was gone. It had been most of the day, hours.  She ran outside in an unbelievable panic. You have to understand. She r...

Cut It Off

Posted by Julie Branstetter on Tuesday, September 30, 2014, In : Writing
As a woman, one of the best decisions I ever made was not to return the phone calls. You simply do not have to continue to make the same wrong choices just because you already have. If you're in a disrespectful relationship that leaves you feeling hurt over and over again, CUT IT OFF. It's okay to aim high! You're not being conceited to require respect, it's just reasonable. And this goes for every kind of relationship, not just dating, but friendships, working relationships or anyt...

Prayer of an Anonymous Abbess:

Posted by Julie Branstetter on Wednesday, September 24, 2014, In : Writing
"Lord, thou knowest better than myself that I am growing older and will soon be old. Keep me from becoming too talkative, and especially from the unfortunate habit of thinking that I must say something on every subject and at every opportunity.

Release me from the idea that I must straighten out other peoples' affairs. With my immense treasure of experience and wisdom, it seems a pity not to let everybody partake of it. But thou knowest, Lord, that in the end I will need a few friends.

Seize The Day

Posted by Julie Branstetter on Thursday, September 4, 2014, In : Writing

12 years and 7 months ago, as newlyweds, my husband and I stood at a 4 way crossing in the middle of sky scrappers in NYC looking for the world trade center. A man came up to us because he could obviously tell we were not from NY and were somewhat lost, and asked us what we were trying to find. We told him we were looking for the world trade center (not knowing at all what it looked like) and he laughed in his very thick New York accent and said, "Are ya kiddin' me??? Yah standin' righ...

LETTING THE WORLD FALL APART

Posted by Julie Branstetter on Friday, June 22, 2012, In : Writing
I had an interesting conversation (all day really) but especially in the car riding with my mom today about cell phones and face book and social networks etc...  You can imagine what an older lady might think of it all but strangely enough she said something I have been thinking about quite a bit lately.  At one time in my life time even, and I'm not that old, we didn't carry around cell phones everywhere we went, at one time no one of whom I knew even owned one.  No one logged onto face book...

SAVING MAN'S BEST FRIEND

Posted by Julie Branstetter on Tuesday, May 8, 2012, In : Writing
One summer, when I was 5 years old living in Hepzibah, Ga., we had a stray dog take up on our front step.  In a hurry to get to work, my mother would fall over the dog on her way out the door every morning.  One particular morning it made her angry and she blurted out, "I'm going to call the pound on you!!" Well, I was old enough to know that the dog catcher would put this poor dog to sleep and I felt so sorry for him.  I was an "Orphan Annie" fan back then.  I knew what would happen!!  I ...

MY UNSUNG FRIEND

Posted by Julie Branstetter on Friday, April 27, 2012, In : Writing
Today I sat on our sofa, in the quiet, as a very dear friend of mine slept quietly beside me.  She has been a very dear friend for the last 10 years and as of late, don't tell her I told you this but, she has really been showing her age.  Her hair is turning grey and she can't get around quite like she used to but she tries and never complains.  I have noticed a little limp when she walks and I am wondering if she may need to visit a doctor.  I fear I take my friend for granted at times, not ...

ROSES ARE BLOOMING, MOUNTAINS ARE HIGH!

Posted by Julie Branstetter on Monday, April 16, 2012, In : Writing
We probably just saw our last frost for the winter. Now everything is green and the roses are blooming.  There are rose bulbs on every bush and even the squirrels are enjoying them to my despise.  We just took a camping trip up to the North Carolina Mountains.  It was the first time my daughters had ever seen the mountains.  We scheduled a trip a couple of years ago in October but on the very weekend we planned the trip the campgrounds received ice and sleet and rain for the whole weekend so ...
