Battle Park (12/29/12)

September 4, 2014

We took a walk through Battle Park in Rocky Mount, NC together today with my new camera I received for Christmas.  I have to learn how to use it.  It has a lot of buttons and features so it may take a little while.  It has rained here for the last few days so I had the feeling we were in for a mushy day by the river.  It was cool but not too cold.  It was mostly cloudy but the sun danced through the clouds throughout the day casting a spotlight for us here and there.  The water was high and I almost caught a photo of a beautiful large crane but sadly it eluded my lens before I could manage the buttons fast enough.  Drat, I will catch you in a photo yet Mr. Crane!  Here is a bit of the scenery from the day.  You'll also see an old building that is no longer in use but it use to be a mill here in Rocky Mount.  My great great grandfather immigrated here with his wife and my great grandmother from Copenhagen, Denmark and they lived in a little row house in downtown Rocky Mount.  They didn't speak a bit of English and within the first year my great great grandmother died.  He would walk from the row house in which they lived to the mill each day and work.  They were very hard working and determined people.  I am here because they brought us here.  I am grateful for the great efforts and sacrifices they made to bring their future generations to a place of freedom.  Anyway, here are the photos.

This old building is now in the process of becoming a brewery.  (2014)

A WEEKEND AT THE COAST

June 28, 2012
Recognize this house?  It's the house used in the movie "Nights in Rodanthe" from the Nicholas Sparks book.  Can you imagine going to bed in this house at night?  I love the beautiful North Carolina coast but this might be taking it a bit too far.  I mean, water under the house??  I have read that the home has since been moved from this location.  If this isn't proof that North Carolina has seen some erosion then what is?  Even with the erosion our beaches are beautiful.  We love to take a da...

WHAT I LOVE ABOUT SMALL TOWN SOUTHERN LIVING

May 30, 2012
Maybe I am a little different; a little odd.  That's fine.  I feel like an old person trapped in a young person’s body and I always have.  I think growing up on southern back porches may be a potent ingredient in the making of my particular brand of peculiar.  Listening eagerly and endlessly to my grandmother tell stories of the depression would have done that to anyone.  I will never forget her stories of bringing in glass bottles of milk from her front step on cold mornings. The image of ...

ROSES BLOOMING, MOUNTAINS HIGH!

April 20, 2012
We probably just saw our last frost for the winter. Now everything is green and the roses are blooming.  There are rose bulbs on every bush and even the squirrels are enjoying them to my despise.  We just took a camping trip up to the North Carolina Mountains.  It was the first time my daughters had ever seen the mountains.  We scheduled a trip a couple of years ago in October but on the very weekend we planned the trip the campgrounds received ice and sleet and rain for the whole weekend so ...

BATTLEPARK DAY TRIP

April 20, 2012

The kids were out of school for a day last week and the weather was great so it was a day for walking the trails at Battlepark for us!  We really picked a great day for it too.  Every inch worm in the forest were hanging down from the trees.  We had to pick them out of our hair before we left.  A little inch worm never hurt anyone, right?  If so, please don't tell me. :)  The water on the Tar River was very high because we had just had a couple days of heavy rain.  Too bad we didn...

YELLOW SNOW DRIFTS IN NORTH CAROLINA

April 20, 2012
Wow, ever heard of a snow drift?  Ever had one inside of your house?  Well, it is official, the spring is here and she came in covered with pollen.  I made a pitcher of tea last night after dinner and left it sitting on the counter to seep overnight.  when I woke up this morning and moved the pitcher, I found a tiny little pollen drift along the bottom edge of the pitcher.  The pitcher was next to the side entrance of the house which is completely under the cover of our very unloved long row ...
