Let Us Make Man & Woman ~ Genesis 1:20-31
Genesis to Revelations Series

Scripture Reading:  Genesis 1:20-31

Today we will focus on the fifth and sixth day of creation.  It is interesting to note that as you read through Genesis 1:20-31 you will recognize that the word AND is very frequently used.  At the beginning of this series I started with an article on 'How To Read the Bible' and a couple tools used in discerning scripture is 'word focus' and 'word relation'.  Word study is important because we are reading an English translation of the Bible.  Studying original meanings of words and word relationships makes understanding much clearer.  The repetitive use of the word AND illustrates that creation was a continual process of events over a days time.  Aside from the scripture defining that a day is an evening and a morning, and aside from the days being numbered consecutively, the events unfolding during those days were also consecutive.  Extra effort was taken in the original scripture to show that when God began His work in creation He continued until he was finished and it took exactly 6 mornings and 6 evenings (6 days) to complete.  This is why it is believed to this day that creation took place during a literal time span of 6 days.  Most of the science that would disagree with this is based off of carbon dating which is a terribly flawed basis for much of the erroneous scientific findings from the 19th century until now.  I will post information soon about the error of carbon dating.  For now, let's stay on course.

Genesis 1:20-23 “And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven.  And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good.  And God blessed them, saying, 'Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth.'  And the evening and the morning were the fifth day.”

On the fifth day of creation we see that God spoke into existence the creatures of the sea, including great whales, and the flying winged fowl of the sky.  It is significant that at the very moment God spoke whales these creatures into existence they were complete.  They did not evolve, but they were already mature animals having the ability to reproduce.  Each creature came already equipped to create offspring like itself.  The seed that lay in each creature would reproduce offspring exactly like that of the creature bearing the offspring.  These scriptures directly defy the concept of evolution.  To this day everything the reproduces, does so after its own kind.  Nothing about this has changed or evolved since the beginning of creation.  This is the fifth day of creation.

Genesis 1:24 & 25 “And God said, ‘Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind’ and it was so.  And God made the beast of the earth after his kind and cattle after their kind, and everything that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good.”

On the sixth day of creation God spoke into existence living creatures to inhabit the earth.  Every creeping thing, cattle, and beast were created.  These creatures were alive and also mature to reproduce after its own kind.  Simply put, each animal would give birth to another animal just like itself.  It is important to note here that these things did not come out of the earth, but the earth sustained those creatures.  Through word study we again understand that this section of scripture is categorizing this next step in creation as being those living things that would inhabit the earth and live off of the earth.  We know this because the verse "Let the earth bring forth the living creature" is preceded by "And God said" and proceeded by "And God made".  Again the creation did not evolve; it was created to live off of the earth and came fully prepared to reproduce in its exact likeness.  It may seem redundant to continue to point this out, however the scripture continually points this out in a repetitive manner for good reason.  Moses could never have known of the Darwinian concept of evolution, but God does know everything from the beginning of creation to the end and Moses was inspired by God to write this so carefully as to make clear how creation truly began.  This is another example of the miracle of Scripture.  The Bible is not just a book to be read, it is a divine revelation to be studied, understood and applied.  We see over and over again that God checks out everything He creates right after He creates it and the Word tells us that He found all of it to be 'good'.  This is important because at this point in creation, creation itself was very different from what we know of it today.  The earth and everything in it was perfect prior to the first sin.  It was only after the first sin that the earth and everything in it became cursed; a creation that had fallen from Gods grace.  Prior to sin there was no rain and Adam and Eve lived off of what grew out of the earth.  They were vegetarians by nature.  We'll discover more of this information as we continue through Genesis.

Genesis 1:26-28  “And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.  So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.  And God blessed them, and God said unto them, 'Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.'”

The last portion of day six  we see God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit creating man and woman and declaring that they would have dominion over all the earth and every living creation within it.  Notice God says, "Let US make man".  These words tell us there is more than one working force involved in creation and each one has distinct 'personhood'.  This does not mean they are all flesh and blood people.  Personhood simply means that each person of God bears qualities of distinct individuality.  The following scriptures read, "make man in OUR image, after our likeness".  Word study will teach us again that in that sentence we have two opposing ideas.  Multiple beings are creating man in ONE image and in ONE likeness.  This also supports why Christians believe in the concept of the Trinity, which is three 'persons', or "individual beings", Father, Son and Holy Spirit, within one unified Godhead figure, which is God.  Now why does it distinctly tell us that we were created in his image AND in His likeness?  Wouldn't that be redundant, repetitive; unnecessary?  When we apply word study carefully we see that God's image and His likeness are two different things.  We were created in His physical likeness and also created to be like Him in character and power.  (Jesus, and also the Father and the Holy Spirit)  You see how each of those relate to the three individual natures of God?  We were also created without the tarnish of sin, as God is without sin.  So not only do we favor him in our looks but also in our actions, at least this is how we were created until sin took its affect.  Remember, this is before the first sin and fall of man and earth.  Now after God created man and woman, both in His image and likeness, He blessed them and made His first commandment to them.  He told them to first be fruitful and multiply.  Therefore we have been commissioned from the foundation of creation to be unified as a man and woman, reproducing and replenishing the earth.  The word replenishing implies that God means for this to continue until the earth is no more.  People are born and people die every day, but God's desire is that we continue to maintain the earth by reproducing and subduing.  He gave man and woman power over all of creation.  The reproduction is mentioned first because it has everything to do with the ability to fulfill the next portion of the commandment.  They were then told to subdue the earth and have dominion over it and everything in it.  Here we see the first marriage, designed and blessed by God with intent and purpose.  With the likeness and image of God, we were created to act as ambassadors in this dominion, affecting the earth with His will and desire just as it is done in heaven.  The prayer that Jesus prayed (Lord's prayer) is a prayer that resonates God's initial intent at creation, "Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven."  Jesus was in affect, the second and last Adam, who by our rebirth, would bring us back into the right standing we had prior to sin.

The next thing God does is give knowledge and instructions to the first man and woman about their health.

Genesis 1:29-31  “And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.  And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to everything that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so.  And God saw everything that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.”

Lastly, He tells man and woman that He has given them every kind of herb bearing seed for plants and trees to yield food for them to eat.  He tells them this is the food they will eat.  God's original intent was for woman and man to eat fruits and vegetables and raw grains.  Isn't that interesting? When people want to get healthy the first thing they know they should do today is remove processed foods and get back to eating whole and raw foods and exercise?  It is proven to be better for our health and this is just more of God's wisdom shared with us today through Moses.  Moses couldn't have known the full purpose in writing this because even in his time people ate meat and drank milk, but today we understand better how food is processed in our bodies and why it is healthier.  This is not to say that we should not eat meat or that meat is unhealthy.  God gave man permission to eat meat later on in scripture and even made unclean meats clean to eat.  Our bodies can handle that, but there is a better way and, in these verses, God tells us what is that better way.  This shows Gods original design for our healthiest diet.  These scriptures also reveal again the miracle of Scripture and prove it's trustworthiness.  These verses came far prior to today's understandings about health yet nutritionist today still agree it is the healthiest way to eat.

This chapter ends with God's final take on creation.  He looks everything over and finds everything that He has made to be VERY good.  Everything was perfect.  In the next chapter we will explore where everything went so terribly wrong and, at the same time, uncover God's plan to help us correct our self-induced problem with sin.
